Firestone Tire Performance Recap: His crew opted early for a three-stop strategy, so Charlie Kimball was clocking laps at nearly qualifying pace all 90 laps of the caution-free race to earn his first IndyCar Series victory and his Firestone Firehawks didn’t let him down. Kimball preferred the softer Firestone alternates, running three of the four stints on the red-sidewall tires, but he credited the solid performance of both the primary and alternate tire specifications for helping him to victory.
From race winner Charlie Kimball, #83 Novo Nordisk Ganassi Racing Dallara/Honda/ Firestone: “The Firestone Firehawks were awesome. You guys brought a great tire, both the primary and alternate. Whatever they put on my car – scrubbed reds, new reds – I was able to put down the lap times they wanted. The reds were incredible! After two stints yesterday in qualifying, we put the same set back on today for that final stint and dropped the hammer and were still able to do 67s (-second laps).” … (on his decisive pass of Simon Pagenaud for the win) “It didn’t feel like a big pass at the time because it just felt like momentum. I was pretty committed to it. I had the run on him going into (turn) four and I knew how good the grip was down on the inside. We had used reds on, so I knew they’d stick. I just threw it up the inside because we’re not here to finish second.”
Also, Gabby Chaves led every lap to capture his first Firestone Indy Lights victory, in the Mid-Ohio 100.
