ENGINEER’S INSIGHT:
“Iowa’s 0.875-mile tri-oval might be short in distance, but the demands of the track surface, progressive banking and loading require a race tire construction similar to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the left side and a superspeedway on the right side. This means our right-side tires are more durable to accommodate weight transfer from the cars turning left for almost a full lap, while the left-side tires have a softer compound and construction to ensure the car doesn't lose grip. There is no change from last year's construction or compound in the race tires we are bringing to Iowa in 2020.”

- Cara Adams, Director of Race Tire Engineering and Production, Bridgestone Americas Motorsports

FIRESTONE FAST FACT
Iowa Speedway’s short oval is a unique challenge because cars are turning left for nearly a full lap. The resulting transfer of weight to the right side requires Firestone Racing engineers to design completely different Firestone Firehawk race tires for each side of the vehicle. Right-side race tires at Iowa have a more durable compound and construction to handle the heavier load while left-side race tires have a softer compound and construction that help ensure the car doesn’t lose grip.
