ENGINEER'S INSIGHT
"To meet the demands of the Detroit racing circuit, Firestone Racing is bringing tires with the same compound and construction used at this year’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. These race-proven primary and alternate tires are well suited for the varied concrete surfaces at Belle Isle. The Firestone Race Tire Engineering team uses different materials in building street course tires compared to road and oval courses, and the design process accounts for more low-to-high speed turns, surface changes and inconsistent road undulations that drivers encounter across each unique street course design."
- Cara Adams, Director of Race Tire Engineering and Production, Bridgestone Americas Motorsports
FIRESTONE FAST FACT
Firestone Firehawk race tires are specifically engineered for the surfaces, conditions, and layout they will encounter in each individual race. For road and street courses, three different types of tires are designed. The black sidewall primary tire offers a competitive balance between speed and durability, while the red sidewall alternate tires have a softer compound for faster speeds with quicker wear. Rain tires are the third option when necessary, featuring a grooved tread pattern that evacuates water and improves grip to help prevent hydroplaning in wet conditions.
